March Ocean Academy SUP Training Club
March training shifts toward true ocean racing preparation as we build for the Tom Davis Ocean Challenge and the Santa Cruz Paddle Fest. Both events demand strong open-ocean skills, composure in dynamic conditions, and the ability to maintain speed and efficiency outside the harbor.
Ocean Academy’s March SUP Training Club is designed to prepare athletes for real ocean environments — swell, wind, current, and tactical positioning in unpredictable water. This month is about strengthening your ocean confidence, improving efficiency in movement, and executing race plans under changing conditions.
With a combination of focused midweek intensity sessions and longer Saturday ocean efforts, March training develops the strength, stamina, and awareness required for competitive ocean course racing.
Training Club Dates – March Edition
Tuesdays:

Time: 5:30 PM – 6:45 PM
Saturdays:
• March 7
• March 21
Time: 7:30 AM – 9:30 AM
Location: Baby Beach, Dana Point Harbor, CA
(Field trips to alternate locations possible)
Rain or shine (unless lightning or gale-force winds)
What You’ll Focus On
Each session blends ocean-specific technical themes with structured interval training to build race-day strength, composure, and execution. March will emphasize:
Preparation for Tom Davis Ocean Challenge & Santa Cruz Paddle Fest
• Explosive starts into open water
• Maintaining speed through swell and side chop
• Ocean course pacing and energy management
• Buoy turn stability in ocean conditions
• Drafting and positioning in variable water
• Reading tide, wind, swell, and surface texture
• Adapting race plans to real-time conditions
The focus is less about tight technical maneuvering and more about maintaining power, balance, and control in authentic ocean race environments.
Beyond the Group Sessions
In addition to the four in-person sessions, athletes will receive a structured supplemental training plan including paddling workouts, strength, core, and cardio programming. These periodized sessions are aligned with spring ocean race demands and can be completed independently or alongside fellow club members.
Requirements & Recommendations
Racing boards only (12’6” or 14’)
• PFDs & leashes required
• Ability to paddle at least 5 miles in ~90 minutes
• Arrive early — sessions begin promptly
• Open-ocean paddling included in select sessions
• No refunds for inclement weather
• No refunds after March 1, 2026
